Recording Lambing

Time: ~1 minute per ewe | Works offline: Yes

By Voice

The quickest way during lambing is to speak:

"Ewe 12 had twin ewe lambs, both alive, 4 and 4.2 kilos"

Kilnside will create:

  • A birth event for each lamb
  • Link each lamb to the mother
  • Record sex, weight, and alive/dead status

More Examples

  • "Ewe 42 lambed a single ram lamb, assisted, 3.8kg"
  • "Ewe 15 had triplets, two ewes and a ram, all alive"
  • "Ewe 08 had twins, one alive ewe lamb and one dead ram lamb"

Using the Form

If you prefer a structured form — or you're recording details that are easier to tap than say:

  1. Find the ewe in the Animals tab (or scan her NFC sticker / EID tag)
  2. Tap Born
  3. Fill in the form:
    • Litter ID (optional — for tracking multiple births in one session)
    • Assistance: Unassisted, Assisted, or Vet
    • Dam condition: Good, Fair, Poor
    • Milk: Good, Fair, Poor, None
  4. For each lamb:
    • Name (auto-suggested, e.g. "Ewe 12 - Lamb 01")
    • Sex: Male / Female
    • Alive: Yes / No
    • Weight (optional)
  5. Tap + to add more lambs (up to 5)
  6. Tap Submit

After Lambing

Once the lambs are tagged, you can link their EID ear tags. See Tagging Lambs.

Tips

  • Record births as they happen — even offline, the timestamp is accurate
  • Don't worry about exact weights if it's hectic — you can add weights later as a separate event
  • Dead lambs should still be recorded — they're marked in the system and won't appear in active counts
  • Multiples — you can record up to 5 lambs per birth event
  • Corrections — if you make a mistake, just tell Kilnside: "Actually Ewe 12 had two ewe lambs, not one"
