How Offline Works
Short version: Everything works without signal. Events sync automatically when you're back in range.
Your Phone is the Source of Truth
When you record an event — whether by voice, typing, or scanning a tag — it's saved directly on your phone. You don't need phone signal or WiFi for any of this.
What Works Offline
| Feature | Offline? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Voice recording | Yes | Requires speech model (download once in Settings) |
| Typing events | Yes | All event types work |
| Scanning NFC stickers | Yes | Looks up animals from local data |
| Scanning EID ear tags | Yes | With RFID wand |
| Browsing animals | Yes | Uses locally synced data |
| Viewing past events | Yes | Uses locally synced data |
| Asking questions | Partial | Simple lookups work; complex queries need connectivity |
When Does It Sync?
Kilnside syncs automatically whenever your phone has an internet connection. You don't need to do anything — just come back into signal range and it happens in the background.
You can check sync status in Settings — it shows when the last sync happened and how many events are waiting to upload.
What If I Record the Same Thing Twice?
Kilnside tracks every event by time and content. If you accidentally record a duplicate, you can delete it before confirming, or your farm administrator can correct it from the desktop.
How Much Data Is Stored Locally?
Your phone stores a complete copy of your farm's animals, recent events, and tag mappings. This typically uses less than 50MB of storage.
Tips for Working Offline
- Download the speech model before heading out — go to Settings and tap Download
- Don't worry about timing — events are stamped with the time they happened, not when they sync
- Check the sync indicator on the Chat tab — it shows whether you're connected or working locally
